A carport in Pretoria is not a sunshade. It has to take a January hailstorm, shed a very large volume of water in twenty minutes, and survive the wind that arrives just before the rain. We build to that, which means proper purlin spacing, real fall on the sheeting and posts set into concrete footings rather than bolted onto a screed.

We size the steel to the span rather than using one section for every job. A four-metre double carport and a nine-metre run in front of a workshop are not the same structure.

Single and double carports

Flat, mono-pitch or lean-to against the house. We work out the fall so water goes where you want it, not across the path to the front door, and we can run gutters and downpipes into an existing stormwater line or a tank.

Patio roofs and awnings

Steel-framed patio covers tied into the house wall with proper flashing, so the join does not become the leak. Where a complex or estate requires a particular profile or colour, we build to the specification.

Roof extensions and repairs

Extending an existing roof line over a stoep or a side passage, replacing rusted purlins, re-sheeting a structure whose steel is still sound, and straightening frames that have been damaged by a fallen branch or a reversing vehicle.

What tends to go wrong with older carports

• Rust at the base of the posts, where water has been standing against untreated steel. We cut out and replace the affected section rather than painting over it.
• Sagging sheeting from purlins spaced too far apart for the sheet profile.
• Hail-dented and split sheets that have started leaking at the fixings.
• Leaking wall junctions where the original flashing was siliconed instead of being tucked into the brickwork.
• Posts kicked out of plumb by vehicles, which loads the whole frame sideways.

Shadeports versus steel

Shade cloth is cheaper up front and it is a perfectly reasonable choice for a rental or a short stay. It will not survive serious hail, and it will need replacing. If the structure has to last, steel and sheeting is the honest recommendation, and we will say so at the quote rather than after.
