Gates built for the opening you actually have
Very few driveways in Pretoria are a standard width, and almost no boundary wall is perfectly level. That is why we do not sell pre-made panels. We come out, measure the opening, check the fall of the driveway and the condition of the piers, and then build the gate in our workshop on Plot 28, De Onderstepoort to suit that specific opening.
The gate you get back is square, runs true, and does not need a brick under one corner to stay shut.
Sliding driveway gates
The default choice for most homes on the northern side, where driveways tend to be wide and level. We build the frame from square tubing or channel depending on the span, fit the track and wheels, and set the guide rollers so the gate cannot lift off. Spans over roughly four metres get a heavier top rail to stop long-term sag.
Swing gates
Better suited to the steeper properties common around Faerie Glen, Constantia Park and the Lynnwood ridge, where a sliding gate would need an unreasonable run-off length. We hang swing gates on greasable pin hinges rather than plain barrel hinges, because the plain ones are what seize and drop.
Pedestrian gates
Usually built to match the driveway gate so the frontage looks like one job rather than three. We can build in a slam lock, a Yale housing or a gate lock box, and we make the striker plate part of the frame so it cannot be prised.
Gate repairs
A good proportion of our week is repairs rather than new builds, and in most cases a gate that drags, sticks or will not latch does not need replacing:
- Dragging or grinding sliding gates — usually worn wheels or a track that has silted up and bent. We replace the wheels and straighten or relay the track.
- Sagging swing gates — the frame has racked out of square. We cut, pull it back to square, weld in a diagonal brace and re-hang it.
- Rusted bottom rails — common where a gate sits in standing water. We cut out the rotten section and weld in new steel rather than patching over it.
- Broken hinges and cracked welds — re-welded and reinforced at the point that failed, not just tacked back together.
- Gates that a motor keeps straining against — nine times out of ten the gate is the problem, not the motor. Fix the gate and the motor stops burning out.
Finishes
Gates are cleaned back, primed and painted. On properties close to the Bon Accord dam and on the smallholdings around Kameeldrift we recommend a heavier build-up, because the damp sits in the mornings and thin paint lifts within a season.
Areas we cover
We fit and repair gates daily through Montana, Montana Park, Sinoville, Doornpoort, Annlin, Wonderboom, Amandasig and Theresapark on the northern side, and across Lynnwood, Faerie Glen, Garsfontein, Moreleta Park, Silver Lakes, Equestria and Die Wilgers in the east. Bon Accord and Akasia are effectively on our doorstep.
Our workshop is on Plot 28, De Onderstepoort in Bon Accord, which keeps us close to both sides of the city. If your suburb is not named above, phone anyway — we travel.
